3 Ways to Sleep Better While Traveling

Travel can bring physical and mental stress, which can lead to travel fatigue. A few symptoms of travel fatigue include exhaustion, headaches, sleep loss, and other types of discomfort. There is no foolproof plan for everyone to get a good night’s sleep while traveling – you have to find what works for you. Below are three suggestions to try for better sleep when traveling. 

1. Book your room carefully

You can’t always have the room you want, but it will never hurt to ask. At the time of booking, ask to avoid lower floors and ask to stay far away from the elevator, vending, and ice machines. It won’t hurt to pack noise-canceling headphones or earplugs, just in case. Also, use white noise to drown out outside noise. 

2. Stick to your schedule

It helps to stick to your nightly routine even when traveling. If you sleep 8 hours a night at home, shoot for that goal when traveling as well. Do you go to the gym every morning at home? Make a commitment to an exercise goal. Perhaps use the hotel gym every morning, or go for a run. Remember to drink plenty of water too. Water is helpful all the time, but especially when traveling. A tall glass of cool water before bed helps for a good night’s rest.

3. Pack a sleep travel kit

If you need your pillow for a good night’s sleep, bring it along. An eye mask can help – sometimes hotels are bright with sunshine in the morning, block that out. Earplugs will help in the hotel room and on the plane. Be sure to have sleep socks – they can keep your body temperature regulated if the room is cold.
